The Newcomers Club has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the City of St. Martinville, the City Council, the mayor and the St. Martin Parish sheriff in the cancellation of its parade over security issues.

The club, which hosts St. Martinville’s annual Mardi Gras parade, was notified last week the parade couldn’t go forward without paying for additional security personnel and barricades.

The club offered to pay $10,000 for the expenses, and the City Council approved the permit, the suit states.

Then the mayor cancelled the parade, citing security costs.
