Trial began in Crowley Tuesday in the second-degree murder trial of Kerry Bertrand, who’s accused in the 2013 death of his stepdaughter, Skylar Credeur.

Credeur, 20, died in her Rayne home in August 2013. Her mother found her dead in the bathtub with a plugged-in laptop computer and running water. A family member later found Bertrand hiding in the home’s attic with a bleeding face.

In opening statements, the defense focused on a lack of DNA evidence linking Bertrand to the scene of the crime, KATC-TV reported. Two witnesses for the prosecution testified Credeur and her mother each filed a protective order against Bertrand a little more than a week before her death.

Trial is scheduled to continue on Wednesday morning.
