A 57-year-old man found guilty of aggravated sex crimes tried to kill himself in the courtroom by slicing his own throat and wrists Thursday, a St. Martin Parish official said.
The 12-person jury that delivered the guilty verdict on five counts of aggravated sex crimes had just left the courtroom when the defendant pulled a razor from his pocket, said Chester Cedars, an assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case.
Cedars declined to name the defendant. KATC-TV identified him as Robbie Frith.
Frith cut himself as St. Martinville Sheriff’s Office deputies were about rearrest him and take him to jail, where he was to stay until he is sentenced later this year.
“He stood up. He slashed his throat and both wrists,” Cedars said. He said the man was medically stabilized in the courtroom.
Cedars said he didn’t know how the defendant got the razor blade through the St. Martin Parish Courthouse metal detectors.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Ginny Higgins said the defendant was taken to a local hospital.
Frith had been booked in November 2011 on five counts of aggravated sex crimes involving five juveniles who claimed they had been sexually assaulted within the preceding three years. At the time of his arrest, he was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on $500,000 bail.
