A majority — 57 percent — of voters supported a tax renewal that generates about $14 million a year for Lafayette Parish School System operations, based on preliminary election results Saturday.

Based on the results, 30,126 voters supported the renewal while 22,431 voters or 43 percent voted against the renewal.

The 7.27-mil property tax has been on the rolls for more than 40 years.

The current millage rate for property owners within the parish’s municipalities is 85.02 and 86.55 for those with property outside municipalities, based on information from the parish tax assessor’s office.

A total of 33.56 mills are directed to the parish school system.
