Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson, responding to a lawsuit filed Monday naming him, the mayor and two officers in last year’s shooting death of Melvin Leblanc, says his officers were cleared in the matter, KATC-TV is reporting.

Gibson, who is running for sheriff of Acadia Parish, also questioned the timing of the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed by Leblanc’s widow, Amy Leblanc, in the federal courthouse in Lafayette, claims two Crowley officers shot Melvin Leblanc “execution style,” with their body cameras turned off after police claim he shot at them with a gun that was later found to be unloaded.
