LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jerry Van Dyke says he had to push his older brother, Dick, into joining him on stage in “The Sunshine Boys,” but the pair are making “magic” together.
In the Neil Simon comedy at a Malibu theater, the siblings play aged ex-vaudevillians who reunite for a TV special despite a longtime feud.
Jerry Van Dyke says that opening night on Wednesday was “fantastic” and drew big audience laughs. He says the scenes in which their characters fight were real crowd-pleasers, especially given their age: he is 79 and Dick Van Dyke is 85.
The Malibu Stage Company production is a limited-run fundraiser for the theater and ends Sunday. But Jerry Van Dyke says there have been nibbles from Broadway — if he can talk his brother into it.
