LAFAYETTE - Police arrested a Youngsville man in the shooting deaths of two people early Wednesday morning in Lafayette, according to a news release.

Police identified the victims only as a 67-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, opting to withhold their identities pending notification of next of kin, the news release says.

The suspect, Eric Jude Abshire, 49, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and booked on two counts of first-degree murder, possession of Schedule IV narcotics, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, the news release says.

Abshire is believed to have shot the victims at a home at 144 Warren St. in north Lafayette after a disturbance with them, police said.

A friend of the victims discovered their bodies just before 9 a.m. as he was passing by the home, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, a spokesman for Lafayette police.

Police did not disclose the nature of the disturbance; the motive for the shooting; or the relationship between the man and woman.

No other information was released Wednesday.
