Journalism students at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette collected awards this weekend at the Southeast Journalism Conference at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

Two were awarded first-place Best of the South Awards: Ashley Hinson, a junior English and journalism major from Lafayette, for arts and entertainment writing; and Janea Judge-Hemans, a junior broadcast major from Lake Charles, for radio feature reporting.

Jessica Taylor, a senior broadcast major from Kenner, won second place for best radio journalist; and Elizabeth Rose, a senior journalism major from Lake Charles, won fifth place in feature writing.

Two students won first-place awards in on-site competition: Allyce Andrew, a senior journalism major from Broussard, in photography; and Markel Guidry, a senior journalism major from Student talent program

The Lafayette Parish school system will present a multimedia, multidisciplinary series of events in downtown Lafayette put on by students of all ages and from all schools. The exhibitions and shows will take place at various places and times from Wednesday through March 9.

Dr. Seuss birthday party

The Iberia Parish Library will hold a party for the 109th birthday of Dr. Seuss at the Parkview Library.

The party, free to all, will run from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. with games, crafts and stories.

Tree ribbon-cutting event

The Memorial Tree ribbon cutting will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the lobby of Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St.,

The Memorial Tree will feature engraved leaves in honor of lost loved ones. For a $100 donation, a leaf will contain the name, date of birth and date of death of a loved one.
