Harold Thibeaux, the bus driver involved in the fatal accident that killed 6-year-old Milton Elementary kindergarten student La’Derion Miller, retired Wednesday afternoon.

James Simon, the Lafayette Parish School Board’s attorney, said the district was notified of Thibeaux’s retirement at 3:15 p.m.

The board was set to meet at 3:30 p.m. for Thibeaux’s termination hearing.

Thibeaux worked as a bus driver for Lafayette schools for the past 23 years.

La’Derion died from injuries suffered in a March 14 bus accident. The accident report said Thibeaux was distracted by another child while La’Derion and his cousin attempted to board the bus.

Investigators are still unsure how La’Derion became caught on the outside of the bus. He was dragged at least 20 feet before he was released and then run over, the left side of his body crushed. He was taken by helicopter to nearby Women’s & Children’s Hospital where he died.

Both of his parents have filed separate wrongful death lawsuits.
