A 29-year-old Lafayette man was arrested Thursday following a drive-by shooting on the Atchalafaya Basin bridge, State Police said.

Cahafer Benjamin was booked in the St. Martin Parish Jail and faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated flight from an officer, convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.

Shortly before noon Thursday, Troop I received a call about a crash between a Chevrolet Silverado and a silver Dodge Charger on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge in St. Martin Parish. The caller said both vehicles continued to travel west after the crash and that the driver of the Charger, later identified as Benjamin, fired three shots out of the driver’s side window, striking the passenger compartment of the Chevrolet truck, Master Trooper Brooks David said.

Troopers located the Charger traveling south on La. 347 near Breaux Bridge and attempted to stop the vehicle, but Benjamin refused and reentered Interstate 10 traveling west, David said.

A brief pursuit ensued until Benjamin surrendered on I-10 westbound near mile marker 108, David said. During the chase, troopers observed a firearm being thrown from the vehicle. The firearm, which later was found, was determined to have been stolen.
