A talent competition and other fun activities and rides are in store for the summer carnival benefiting the Lafayette Association of Retarded Citizens this weekend at Acadian Village.
The carnival is from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children, and free for children 4 and younger.
A talent competition at 5 p.m. Saturday is open to youths ages 5 to 17, and there’s a separate category for 18 and older. Advance registration is $30 for the talent competition.

Youth kayak race Saturday
Petite Tour du Teche, kayak races for youths ages 5 to 17, is Saturday beginning at the Parc des Ponts in Breaux Bridge.
Registration is from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., with the first race at 9 a.m.
The races are held in Bayou Teche around buoys and within view of spectators. Beginning paddlers and stand-up paddleboarders also are welcome to compete.
The entry fee is $20 per paddler. Saturday’s race is a precursor to the annual Tour du Teche, a 135-mile, three-day race of the entire Bayou Teche from Port Barre to Berwick from Oct. 3-5.
Stuff the Bus drive
United Way of Acadiana’s annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive begins next week.
Suggested supplies include notebooks, pencils, crayons, folders, glue, scissors, paper towels, construction paper, rulers, ink pens, red pens, erasers, glue sticks, binders, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, index cards and loose-leaf paper.
Aug. 7: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Winn-Dixie, 924 Rees St., Breaux Bridge.
Aug. 8: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital, 1101 Kaliste Saloom Road, Lafayette; Target and Office Depot locations, 3215 Louisiana Ave., Lafayette; and United Way of Acadiana, 215 E. Pinhook Road, Lafayette.
Aug. 9: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 101 E. Vermilion St., Abbeville.
Supplies will be distributed the week of Aug. 18.

Chamber unveils job tool
The Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce will discuss workforce development and unveil the Louisiana Job Connection, a new tool to match employers with job seekers, during its Food for Thought luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 5 at the Petroleum Club.
Luncheon registration is $35 for members and $50 for general admission.
