A man and his 17-year-old son have been booked with negligent injury in connection with the accidental shooting Tuesday at Moss Bluff Elementary in Calcasieu Parish, according to a report by KATC.

Investigators said Michael Lane Dugas, 50, gave son Jake Dugas a gun for protection to keep in a bedroom he shared with his brother, a first-grader, KATC reported.

The first-grader found the unsecured gun and brought it to school, where it fell out of his backpack, was picked up by a second student and discharged, striking a third student.

The injured student underwent surgery on Tuesday and was making progress, a family attorney said.
