A different kind of hunting season starts Sept. 1 as teams will fan out to find odd, silly and fun items as part of a scavenger hunt to support the United Way of Acadiana.

Local companies are invited to organize teams of employees to compete in the scavenger hunt, which is organized by Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital as a communitywide event to raise money for the United Way. The hospital had organized its own in-house scavenger hunt for seven years and decided to open it up to the public as a way to raise money for the community through the United Way of Acadiana.

Those who register early can do so at a cost of $300 through Friday, with the registration period continuing from Aug. 23 through Sept. 1 at a cost of $400.

Teams will receive an email at 8 a.m. on Sept. 1 with the list of items they must find — which could include classic comic books, gorilla masks, Donny Osmond albums and other hard-to-find items.

Teams will drop off their items Sept. 4 at a location to be announced.

Each item is assigned a different point value, and winners will be announced on Sept. 8.
