The Diocese of Lafayette will install its newest leader in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette on April 15. Basile native the Rev. J. Douglas Deshotel is set to serve as the diocese’s seventh bishop.
The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. and will be live-streamed and accessible at ustream.tv/channel/catholic-diocese-of-lafayette-la.
Only those who are formally invited to the bishop’s installation will be allowed inside the cathedral.
Seating for those without invitations will be available next door in the Cathedral Carmel Elementary School gymnasium. Screens will be set up in the gym to view the live stream, and communion will be offered.
Deshotel was born in 1952 in Basile, which straddles the Allen-Evangeline parish line. The 64-year-old is an auxiliary bishop at the Diocese of Dallas.
Deshotel is replacing Bishop Michael Jarrell, who is retiring.
