LAFAYETTE — A St. Landry Parish deputy who is the spokeswoman for Sheriff Bobby Guidroz was cited early Saturday for reckless driving in an incident in Port Barre, officials said.
Capt. Megan Vizena, who lives in Port Barre, was issued a citation by Port Barre police hours after the 1:45 a.m. incident, Port Barre Police Chief Deon Boudreaux said.
Vizena lives near the home of a woman who called police to report Vizena pulled into her driveway, hit her car then backed out into a ditch before Vizena drove into her own driveway nearby.
Boudreaux said there was little to no evidence that Vizena hit the caller’s car. He said Vizena was issued the citation for backing into a ditch as she left the woman’s home. Boudreaux said there was not enough evidence to issue a hit-and-run citation.
He also said Port Barre police who knocked on the door of Vizena’s home after the incident did not receive a response.
On Saturday after the sun rose, Boudreaux said he talked to Vizena.
“She told me she didn’t remember, didn’t recall hitting the car,” Boudreaux said.
Boudreaux also said that by the time police talked to Vizena, it was hours after the incident and too late for a sobriety test.
Vizena said Monday that she didn’t answer the door because she was sleeping and didn’t hear the knocking. She also said she didn’t get along with the neighbor who called police.
“The accusations are absolutely false,” Vizena said.
Guidroz said investigators looking over the evidence have ruled out pursuing criminal charges against Vizena. But, he said, she could still face disciplinary actions if they find she violated department policy.
“A determination will be made as soon as we can decipher all the information we have,” Guidroz said.
On Monday, Vizena remained on duty, Guidroz said.
Vizena is the public representative for the Sheriff’s Office, appearing in television spots and promoting the department’s initiatives.
She’s also on a radio station in Opelousas where she broadcasts arrests, and reporters who write about crime in St. Landry Parish have Vizena on speed dial.
