LAFAYETTE — Jane Ellen Carstens, a retired University of Louisiana at Lafayette College of Education professor, died Monday.
She was 89.
The library sciences professor retired after 52 years of service to the university, she told The Advocate for a 2004 story on the Red Jackets, the university’s earliest cheerleading squad.
Carstens was a Red Jackets member from 1939-1942.
Carstens said she received her degree in elementary education in 1942 from the university, then known as Southwestern Louisiana Institute.
She attended LSU and Columbia University, where she completed her master’s and doctoral degrees.
In 1986, she received the Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumni Award and, in 1994, its Excellence in Teaching Award, according to information released by the university Monday.
She also established several scholarships at the university.
