A man from Mexico was sentenced Tuesday to 13 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States, officials said.
Hugo Campuzano Cuellar was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard T. Haik in Lafayette. He had pleaded guilty Aug. 26 to one count of illegal reentry by a deported alien, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.
Finley said immigration officers discovered the 37-year-old Mexican national in a jail cell at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.
Cuellar, from Villa de las Flores, Coacalco, Mexico previously had been deported from the United States on May 6, 2002, May 16, 2005, and May 7, 2009, Finley said.
Homeland Security Investigations along with detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated the case that was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dominic A. Rossetti.
