NEW IBERIA — The president of the association putting on the 2014 Sugar Cane Festival said there is no truth to rumors that the festival would be canceled.
Jessie Breaux, president of the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival Association, said the rumors had become “rampant and detrimental to the success of our upcoming festival.”
Breaux said they come as the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office has fallen under scrutiny for its handling of security at past festivals and for an incident in March not related to the festival that involved the death of a man while in police custody.
The festival will be Sept. 24-28 in various areas of New Iberia, including downtown.
The festival, which will celebrate its 73rd anniversary, is a family-oriented slate of events commemorating Iberia Parish’s farming heritage and the industry, Breaux said.
