A Lake Charles man died in a high-speed car crash in Vermilion Parish early Monday morning, with his driver, a Lafayette man, taken to a hospital for his injuries after his 2016 Chevrolet Corvette ran off the highway and flipped.

Hoang Nguyen, 30, died in the 12:25 a.m. crash on La. 339 near Reno Road, according to a State Police news release. The driver, 31-year-old Martin Nguyen, suffered moderate injuries.

Police said Martin Nguyen was traveling at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a curb and drove off the right side of the roadway. When the car began to flip, Hoang Nguyen, who was not wearing a seatbelt was partially ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries, police said.

The driver, Martin Nguyen, was wearing a seatbelt.

Police suspect impairment as an additional factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken from Martin Nguyen and are pending analysis.

Police did not say whether the two men are related.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, police said.
