A fire broke out in a University of Louisiana at Lafayette dormitory Sunday morning, spurring an evacuation as officials worked to figure out the fire’s cause, University Police reported.

Firefighters arrived about 10 a.m. Sunday to find black smoke billowing from the rear of Baker Hall, an undergraduate residence hall on campus, said Cpl. Billy Abrams, a police spokesman. As firefighters rushed to the fire’s source on the third floor, students were already running out of the building, Abrams said.

The firefighters soon contained the flames to a data equipment closet. The room as well as a few rooms below it sustained water damage, Abrams said.

No one was injured, and firefighters are still working to determine the cause. University officials are trying to figure out whether any students will need to be relocated. The flames also damaged the dorm’s phone and data service, and it was unclear how long those services would take to repair, Abrams said.
