Deputies on Friday sent nine dogs to an animal rescue shelter after raiding a St. Martinville man’s home and finding a number of drugs alongside evidence the dogs had been trained to fight.
Bond had not been set on Friday afternoon for Joseph “Dix” Gilliam, 40, who faces a count of dog fighting and counts of possessing with intent to distribute crack-cocaine and synthetic marijuana, St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Maj. Ginny Higgins said.
Investigators found equipment they believe Gilliam used to train his nine dogs to fight. The dogs had “serious scarring believed to have been caused by dog fighting,” Higgins said.
At Gilliam’s home in the 500 block of Governor Mouton Street, which is within a school zone, investigators also found marijuana, hydrocodone, liquid codeine and paraphernalia “used to package and sell” drugs, Higgins said.
Gilliam was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center.
