CHACAHOULA — A 39-year-old Lafayette man was killed after the vehicle he was riding in overturned on US 90 in Terrebonne Parish, ejecting him, shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, according to a Louisiana State Police report.
A 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Mario Villafuerte, 44, of Opelousas, was traveling west on US 90, near LA 20, and was approaching a slower moving vehicle, when Villafuerte turned sharply to avoid striking the vehicle in the rear, Trooper First Class Evan Harrell of Troop C reports.
The Suburban overturned several times. Villafuerte, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries, Harrell said.
The rear passenger in the Suburban was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Harrell said. The passenger was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans, where he died from his injuries. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.
Although alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, blood was taken from Villafuerte and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, Harrell said.
