A two-alarm blaze inside a party rental store closed down portions of a Lafayette roadway Tuesday morning as firefighters worked to get the fire under control.

The fire at Party Central/Acadiana Trailers, in the 3100 block of Cameron Street, started when heat from a welder ignited combustible material on a truck undergoing maintenance, Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan said.

Thick plumes of black smoke billowed from the building around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Trahan said the heavy smoke came from the large amount of plastic material and other combustibles burning inside the building. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to contain the blaze.

Two employees inside the business said the fire started in the workshop area.
