LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Police Department arrested a local man after he allegedly struck two people with a piece of lumber during a Thursday night fight on 7th Street.
Larry Meche, 60, was arrested on one count each of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and simple battery, according to a news release.
The fight broke out in the 300 block of 7th Street about 9:45 p.m. Thursday, the release said.
One of the victims, a 43-year-old woman, told police that Meche struck her multiple times, causing cuts to her head.
The second victim, a 40-year-old Lafayette man, suffered cuts to his hand and back, the release said.
Officers found Meche hiding in the bushes nearby, the release said.
Both victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment, the release said.
Safety checkpoint scheduled Saturday
LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Police Department will conduct a safety compliance checkpoint Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon within the city.
The purpose of the checkpoint is to assure that all motorists are in compliance with Louisiana Laws while traveling on the roadway, according to a news release.
Officers at the checkpoint will be verifying that motorists have a valid driver license, proof of insurance and are properly wearing seat belts.
Authorities seeking missing teenager
NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is searching for a missing 15-year-old boy who was last seen Sept. 24 around Main Street in New Iberia, according to a news release.
Kevin St. Julien is a black youth, 5 feet 1 inch to 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds, the release said.
St. Julien has earrings in both ears and is reported to wear colored elastic bands around his wrists, the release said.
