An arsonist set fire just before 1 a.m. Monday to a rental house on Madison Street, causing minor fire and smoke damage to the home as tenants were preparing to move in, authorities said.

“Investigators determined that multiple fires were set inside the dwelling,” said Alton Trahan, public information officer for the Lafayette Fire Department.

Firefighters forced their way into the empty home at 229 Madison St., a block each way between Cameron and Simcoe streets, and quickly extinguished the fire, Trahan said in a news release.

The fire remains under investigation, Trahan said.

Gang links suspected in two shootings

Authorities continued to investigate two shootings that occurred late Sunday and early Monday and are thought to be a product of rivalry between two Crowley gangs, Chief K.P. Gibson said.

A man and a juvenile were treated for injuries and released from the hospital after three men forced their way into a home in the 500 block of East 15th Street just before midnight and fired, Gibson said in a news release Monday.

The shooters are described only as three black men, Gibson said.

Another man escaped injury about 1:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of West Fourth Street when someone fired shots at his car as he left home, Gibson added.

The two incidents may be related, but investigators are having trouble finding information and witnesses, Gibson said.

“It becomes extremely difficult when victims, witnesses and people with knowledge of these events choose not to cooperate with an investigation,” Gibson said. “We understand their concerns but do need their help.”

In the meantime, Gibson said, additional officers are patrolling the area.

Shooting victim accused of stabbing officer

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting Sunday in which the victim is accused of stabbing the Jeanerette police officer before the officer shot him, authorities said.

Lance Dauphine, 42, 640 B. Trappey St., was booked Monday into the Iberia Parish Jail on two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Ryan Turner said in a news release.

Dauphine and the unidentified officer were treated and released from a hospital, Turner said.

Officers responded to a “suspicious person” complaint about 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the 400 block of Bert Street and found Dauphine, who had fled the scene, at 291 Martin Luther King Drive, where the altercation took place, Turner said.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Bureau of Investigations is investigating the shooting, Turner said.

Narcotics fugitive booked following raid

An Opelousas man arrested Friday on narcotics distribution counts had been on the run since agents raided his home in late October, authorities said Monday.

Lee Albert Sam Jr., 24, with a last-known address of 615 N. Union St., was booked on a count each of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and ecstasy, possessing drug paraphernalia and violating controlled dangerous substance law within a drug-free school zone.

Sam’s home was raided Oct. 23 when deputies found the drugs and “packaging material commonly used for distribution,” said Sgt. Clay Higgins, spokesman for the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Undercover agents with the Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Enforcement Team had been making buys from Sam in the weeks leading up to the raid, Higgins said.
