NEW IBERIA — An 18-year-old woman died Monday night from a gunshot wound to the chest in an apparent accidental shooting, authorities said Tuesday.

Iberia Parish Coroner Carl Ditch identified the victim as Mandi Viator.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. at the KOC Kampground, 3104 Curtis Lane, New Iberia, according to Capt. Ryan Turner, spokesman for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“It appears to be an apparent accidental shooting, However, we’re still looking into it,” Turner said.

Turner declined to release how the shooting occurred, who fired the fatal shot and what type of weapon the girl was shot with.

“We’re not releasing any other details while the investigation is pending,” Turner said.

No other information was available Tuesday.

Body discovered near Walmart store

LAFAYETTE — A body was discovered in an open field behind the Walmart store on northwest Evangeline Thruway shortly before noon Tuesday.

Police do not suspect foul play, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department.

Mouton said the body was found in an open field overgrown with grass.

The body was picked up by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is pending, Mouton said.

The person’s identity, age and sex was not released Tuesday.

No other information was released Tuesday.

Deputies seeking missing teenager

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is searching for Jessie Luquette, 17, who was last seen Sept. 3.

Luquette is a white girl, 5 feet, 6 inches, 130 pounds with brown eyes and long black hair.

She was last seen wearing black and pink checkered pajama pants with a gray T-shirt over a pink long sleeve shirt.

She has family in Florida and possibly Oklahoma, the Sheriff’s Office said.
