Officer-involved shooting under investigation

State Police are investigating an incident in which a Lafayette Parish sheriff’s deputy responding to a disturbance call Friday shot and wounded a man authorities say confronted deputies with a shotgun.

Deputies were initially sent to the 100 block of Crip Lane in reference to a disturbance and after an investigation were led to the 1600 block of Ridge Road to question a suspect, KATC-TV reported.

There, deputies say, they were confronted by Jessie J. Champagne, 54, who was armed with a shotgun. Deputies say they were forced to defend themselves and that Champagne suffered a gunshot wound to his lower body.

He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office says Champagne, upon release from the hospital, will be charged with indecent behavior with juveniles, simple assault and disturbing the peace.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.
