Detectives with the Lafayette Police Department have arrested a 15-year-old boy in Lafayette in connection with the shooting, police announced late Tuesday.

The juvenile is being booked into the Lafayette Parish Juvenile Detention Center on attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and gun-free zone violation, according to a news release from the department.

The 17-year-old victim remains in critical condition, and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.

A 17-year-old boy was in critical condition at an area hospital after he was shot Tuesday while playing basketball at the Lafayette Boys and Girls Club.

Police responded to a shooting at the facility around 4:40 p.m. and found the victim shot multiple times, according to a news release from the Lafayette Police Department.

The two boys were outside playing basketball when they got into an altercation, and one of them opened fire on the other, police said.

Police were still working to identify the shooter, who fled the scene immediately, police said.
