OPELOUSAS — An Opelousas man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison in the December 2011 death of 2-year-old Derrion Sam.
Dominique Jackson, 24, was sentenced in 27th Judicial District Court by Judge James Doherty about a month after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder in the toddler’s death.
Jackson was convicted of hurting the child while baby-sitting him for the child’s mother, 23-year-old Latricia Hunt, who is Jackson’s former girlfriend.
Hunt is awaiting trial on second-degree cruelty to a juvenile in the case and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
The child died at Opelousas General Hospital on Dec. 19, 2011, a day after he had been in Jackson’s care. The coroner ruled Sam died of blunt force trauma, with his autopsy revealing evidence of previous rib fractures and abdominal damage.
