A 30-year-old St. Martinville man was booked Sunday night in a fatal shooting the night before. DeAnthony Francois is accused of killing 19-year-old Dametri Joseph Romero, of New Iberia, inside a car that a witness later saw Francois driving as he tried to dump Romero’s body, authorities said.

The shooting followed an altercation inside the car, according to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, and occurred in the Freedom Lane area of St. Martinville.

The Sheriff’s Office was called shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday to an oilfield business and hunting lease in the 1000 block of Aubrey Ozenne Road, where a hunter saw a man fitting Francois’ description in a maroon car with another man who had been injured. The driver had a gun, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“Prior to being able to ask why he was on the property, Francois exited the gate and fled the area,” the Sheriff’s Office press release says.

The Sheriff’s Office says Francois was attempting to dispose of Romero’s body on the property.

The St. Martinville Police Department pulled over the maroon car for a traffic stop around 7 p.m. Sunday night, leading to the apprehension of Francois. Investigators later found Romero’s body, about 10:30 p.m., off Francois Road.

Francois was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on a count of second-degree murder.
