A New Iberia man was hospitalized in critical condition after a box-truck driver made an improper turn across multiple lanes in Broussard on Monday, causing a car to lodge beneath his cargo before he crashed into a pickup truck, police said.

Broussard officers responding to the scene at 2:30 p.m. on U.S. 90 at Ida Road found a 2010 Mazda MZ3, driven by 40-year-old David Meredith, lodged beneath a box truck driven by Iga Nogal, 38, of Texas, said Chief Brannon Decou.

Officers determined Nogal was traveling west when he crossed all four lanes of U.S. 90 to turn right onto Ida Road, Decou said. When Nogal did so, the box part of his truck went over the Mazda, causing the car to also strike a Ford F250 truck on the other side.

The pickup truck driver, 58-year-old Daniel Guidry, of Youngsville, was not injured, Decou said.

Nogal was cited for improper turning movements.

Toxicology results are pending, although alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, Decou said.
