LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a possible homicide involving a body found in the trunk of a burning car early Saturday. The discovery was made at 5:11 a.m. after deputies responded to the 100 block of Felix Road in response to a vehicle fire, according to a news release.
The badly burned body was found inside the trunk of a 1999 Chevrolet four-door vehicle heavily damaged in the fire, the release said.
The identity of the man remains unknown and will likely require DNA testing. An autopsy is pending, the release said.

Bicyclist, 65, killed in Iberia Parish crash
NEW IBERIA — A 65-year-old Iberia Parish man died Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in the 1200 block of Hopkins Street in New Iberia, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
The crash killed George Hyplote, who was riding a bicycle northbound in the southbound lane of Hopkins Street, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said deputies believe Hyplote attempted to cross the roadway when he was struck by a 1995 Buick LeSabre driven by Polk, who was impaired at the time.
Polk was transported to the Iberia Parish Jail and booked on first-offense driving while intoxicated, the release said.
Routine toxicology samples were taken and are pending at this time, the release said.
Deputies continue with the investigation and future charges have not ruled out at this time, the release said.
Sunset man killed in two-vehicle crash
ST. LANDRY PARISH — A 32-year-old Sunset man died in a Sunday morning two-vehicle crash on La. 93 south of Sunset, State Police said.
The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. when a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero driven by John Broussard, 25, of Cankton, ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and flipped, State Police said. Broussard was able to exit the vehicle, but his passenger, Steven Francis, remained inside.
A second vehicle driven by 31-year-old Justin Chavis, of Opelousas, struck the passenger side of the Montero, causing both vehicles to travel off the road and into the ditch, the release said.
Broussard and Chavis suffered minor injuries. Francis died from his injuries, the release said.
