Investigators have issued an arrest warrant for an Opelousas man accused in the Thursday night rape and beating of a woman at a truck stop off Interstate 49.

Jamal Scott James, 25, is wanted on one count each of aggravated rape and attempted first-degree murder, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Clay Higgins said.

Investigators were called to the Beau Chene Truck Stop around 9:40 p.m. after a naked woman was found beaten inside the building, Higgins said. James was implicated in the crime through surveillance footage and other physical evidence, including a weapon found on the scene, Higgins said.

James is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts is urged to contact authorities or St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers at (337) 948-8477. The group is offering a $1,000 reward for James’ arrest.

Extradition delayed for man accused in New Iberia slaying

Extradition has been delayed for a New Iberia man named a suspect in the 2008 slaying of Judy Blanchard Landry after his arraignment on an unrelated case in Missouri was postponed, KATC-TV reported.

The attorney for 60-year-old Keith Leleux failed to appear Thursday in Taney County Circuit Court for an arraignment and bond reduction hearing in a Nov. 20 domestic abuse battery case, Taney County Prosecutor Jeff Merrell said. The hearing was reset for Jan. 8.

The county is working to resolve the domestic battery case in Missouri before extraditing Leleux to Louisiana for trial in Landry’s slaying, Merrell said.

Leleux is accused of choking his live-in girlfriend in Forsyth, Missouri, according to police reports.

Upon his arrest, authorities connected Leleux, who is partially paralyzed, to the 6-year-old cold case slaying of Landry, 61, who was found dead of strangulation inside her Robert S. Drive home on July 1, 2008, with her neck wrapped in zip ties.

Clerk pulls out own gun to scare off robber

A Corner Store clerk who was shot at Thursday afternoon by a man attempting to rob the store pulled out his own gun to scare off the assailant, according to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The would-be robber entered the store at 728 Ann St. shortly before 12:14 p.m. and fired a handgun at the clerk, but missed. The clerk then pulled out his own handgun and pointed it at the man, who then fled, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The man was last seen headed South on Ann Street. He is described as a black male, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, and was wearing dark-colored pants, a hooded jacket with white designs on the front, and had a black towel or rag covering his face concealing his identity, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Anyone has information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (337) 369-3711.

Three beating suspects extradited to Louisiana

Three men detained in Texas on accusations they robbed, beat and stabbed a Morgan City man early Sunday were extradited Thursday to Louisiana, KATC-TV reported.

Jesus Munoz Perez, 30, and Zene Vasquez, 24, both of Morgan City, along with Ossiel Muñoz Perez, 26, of Houma, were part of a group of five who broke into a Levee Road home around 4:50 a.m. Sunday and attacked and robbed a 33-year-old man, Morgan City Police said.

Two others from Morgan City, Mariah A. Grimes, 21, and Geronimo Martinez, 28, were booked in the incident, police said.

All five face counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary, police said.

The victim told police a group of people forced their way into his home, robbed him, beat him and cut him, and he said he knew Grimes, police said. Officers said they found the victim bleeding from several wounds and gashes and believe a tire iron found on the scene was used in the attack.
