Body found Sunday in house destroyed by fire

Authorities are working to identify a body found inside an Acadia Parish house destroyed by a fire Sunday morning in what may be an arson, KATC-TV reports.

A passing motorist first reported the fire around 6:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Choppys Road near Church Point.

When firefighters with the Mire Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call, they found the structure consumed by flames and burned to the ground.

Once the flames were out, firefighters discovered a body near the front door. The Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office told KATC-TV that the body will be taken to the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death as well as the race and sex of the victim.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has taken over the investigation. KATC-TV reports that the fire is being investigated as a possible arson.

In a second incident near Church Point in Acadia Parish Sunday morning, the Richard Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at the intersection of La. 95 and Blacksmith Road, KATC-TV reports.

Firefighters arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames and burned beyond recognition in front of an abandoned home, the TV station reports.

The vehicle fire is also being investigated as a possible case of arson, KATC-TV reports, though there is no indication yet if the two fires are related.

Anyone with information about either fire may contact the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office at (337) 788-8700.
