The public is urged to avoid an area of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Tuesday and Thursday where law enforcement agencies will be conducting an active shooter drills, the university announced Monday.

The drills will take place each day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside Griffin Hall, which will be closed and inaccessible during the drill, according to a university news release. A portion of Rex and East Lewis streets will also be closed.

“The purpose of the event is to enable law enforcement and emergency medical personnel to continue being proficient when dealing with large events and multiple agencies,” the release states.

Participating agencies include the University Police Department, Acadian Ambulance, Lafayette General Medical Center, Lafayette Police Department and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.
