Residents living within a mile of LaFosse and Everglade Roads were allowed to return home around 3 p.m. Friday after officials worked almost nine hours to contain a gas leak.

About two dozen homes were evacuated from the rural area of Acadia Parish after the leak was called in around 6:40 a.m., State Police spokesman Brooks David said.

Roads within the area were blocked off for most of the day, and Midland High School, which was scheduled to close at 11 a.m., shut down first thing in the morning, David said.

Enterprise Products of Port Allen owns the line, which contained liquefied petroleum gas, David said.
