An employee of a sporting goods store in Broussard accidentally shot a customer while attempting to clear a handgun Thursday, according to Broussard Police.

The customer was shot in the leg after handing the gun to the employee at Buckfins N’ Feathers in the 600 block of Albertson Parkway.

The gun belonged to the victim, Chief Brannon Decou said in an email. The victim was in stable condition after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.

“Witness statements as well as surveillance from the store confirm that the discharge was accidental,” according to the police statement, and no charges are expected.
