St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz has canceled his scheduled appearance at a community rally to be held Thursday in Courthouse Square, spokesman Sgt. Clay Higgins said.

The sheriff had a medical procedure rescheduled for Thursday, and “his doctor advised against” attending the event, said Higgins, who will represent the Sheriff’s Office at the rally on Guidroz’s behalf.

“The sheriff is in perfect health,” Higgins said Wednesday. “It’s not anything life-threatening.”

Guidroz this week accepted an invitation from District B Alderman-elect Tyrone Glover to speak at a protest organized in response to the nationwide conversation on police brutality and racial profiling.

Opelousas Police Chief-elect Donald Thompson and Opelousas Mayor-elect Reggie Tatum have also accepted invitations to attend, Glover said Tuesday.

The event starts at 5 p.m. in front of the St. Landry Parish courthouse.

Crowley chief denies allegations in lawsuit

Police Chief K.P. Gibson, accused in a lawsuit of illegally hiring and promoting officers without the Crowley Board of Alderman’s approval, said the “procedural error” has been corrected and his officers were properly commissioned.

The 27 new-hires received Police Officer Standards and Training certifications “through a certified police academy,” Gibson wrote Wednesday in an emailed statement. “We will now allow the justice system to determine this matter.”

Gibson released the statement after The Advocate published a story Tuesday about a lawsuit filed by Crowley resident Theresa Richard against Gibson, the city and two Crowley police officers. In the suit, Richard alleges the two officers who arrested her for video-taping them — Lt. Scott Fogleman and officer Skeat Thibodeaux — illegally violated her right to record the public employees, and she alleges they were not commissioned officers in the first place.

Richard is seeking unspecified monetary damages for the arrests. All counts against Richard were dismissed, the lawsuit states.
