NEW IBERIA — A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest overnight Thursday while walking down LaSalle Street.
The victim told deputies around 1:15 a.m. he heard something like a gunshot, felt he had been hit and ran to a friend’s house on Cedar Hill Circle to contact authorities, said Maj. Ryan Turner, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
“We’re not sure what the relationship is between the suspect and the victim,” Turner said.
The man was treated at an area hospital for a single gunshot wound to his upper chest.
It’s the second shooting in the neighborhood this week, although “there’s no evidence” at this point to connect the two, Turner said.
“But we haven’t ruled out the possibility,” he added.
Detectives late Wednesday arrested Jezreel Westley, 21, and Michael Charles Jr., 20 — both of New Iberia — in an overnight home invasion and shooting that hospitalized two men.
“We’re pretty sure this wasn’t a random act of violence,” Turner said of the home invasion.
The men are accused of forcing their way into a home in the 900 block of West Pershing Street and shooting the victims, ages 52 and 56, Turner said.
Charles also was booked on a count of possession with intent to distribute Schedule IV drugs, and Westley was booked on an additional count of probation violation.
