An 88-year-old man is dead, and a 49-year-old man is in jail for his third-offense DWI after he struck and killed the victim in Vermilion Parish on Friday night.

Louisiana State Police said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. on La. Highway 82 west of La. Highway 3147. An initial LSP investigation shows Gary Shipman, of Cameron, was traveling westbound on La. 82 in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. Shipman spotted a man, Donald Broussard, of Pecan Island, walking in the same lane. Shipman swerved and hit Broussard, who was pronunced dead on the scene.

Shipman was arrested and taken to Vermilion Parish jail where he was charged with third-offense DWI, tampering with an ignition interlock device and open alcoholic container.
