RAYNE - A 12-year-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon after he fell into a water-filled pit while playing with two other boys, Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly said Monday.

The boy has been identified as Keshawn Moten, Stelly said.

Police responded at 12:13 p.m. to the pit, which is located on private property near the intersection of Edwards and Hoffpauir streets, he said.

“When officers arrived at the scene, there was no sign of anything in the water,” Stelly said.

Stelly said the man-made pit was about 20-feet deep. He said he was not sure why the pit had been dug.

The pit was drained by the Rayne Volunteer Fire Department and the body was recovered at 2:08 p.m. by the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Stelly said.

Officers interviewed the two eyewitnesses at the scene who told them Moten fell in while fishing in the pit, Stelly said.

“It’s very much a tragic situation,” Stelly said.
