A 26-year-old Abbeville man has been charged with first-degree murder in the July 5, 2012, fatal shooting of Paul Rice Jr., the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office said.

A parish grand jury indicted Derrick "Deebo" Mitchell on Wednesday in the death Rice, who was shot and killed at the corner of Felicity and Bailey streets in Abbeville, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

This case is one of several unsolved murders  assigned to the Sheriff’s Violent Crimes Task Force, which is made up of investigators from the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police, the 15th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Abbeville Police Department, the FBI and the Abbeville City Marshal Office.

The Sheriff's Office said investigators working as part of the task force located witnesses to be re-interviewed. Information they obtained was presented to a grand jury for the 15th Judicial District that led to Mitchell's indictment, the Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff Mike Couvillon praised the work of the violent crimes task force and others in law enforcement who assisted in working to close unsolved murder cases.

"We are by no means finished and are committed to continue our efforts on all unsolved murders in our efforts to bring these criminals to justice so that the victim’s families can at least begin to look for some level of closure," Couvillon said.
