Some residents were evacuated and a St. Mary Parish Water District plant employee was treated an area hospital Monday after chlorine began leaking from the Verdunville facility, according to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The chlorine leaked for about three hours at the 244 Lake Road plant until authorities contained it, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Residents on Parish Road 131, from Wayne Road to Francine Road, were evacuated during that time and returned home around 12:45 p.m.

The State Police Hazmat team is investigating the leak.
