Police have arrested a Crowley funeral director accused of refusing to return unused burial funds to the family of a deceased person.

Police last Wednesday arrested Joseph Wilturner Jr., 45, of Wilturner Funeral Home on North Avenue C, on a count of felony theft, according to a Monday news release from the Crowley Police Department.

Police investigated the case for several months after the family made numerous requests to have the unused funds returned but received nothing, the release states.

Wilturner had bonded out of the Acadia Parish jail by Monday.

Wilturner’s arrest comes more than a month after the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office removed two bodies from the man’s funeral home after two families complained they didn’t know the status of their loved ones’ remains months after funeral services, according to KATC-TV.

Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson said the arrest “does not have any ties” to those incidents.
