Two DeQuincy teenagers died in a Sunday morning wreck in Calcasieu Parish when the pickup trucks they were driving collided head-on, Louisiana State Police said.

Charlee Smith, 18, was driving northbound on La. 27 about 10:30 a.m. Sunday when he attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone in a curve in the highway, said Sgt. James Anderson, a State Police spokesman.

Smith’s 2001 Chevrolet Silverado swiped the side of a southbound utility trailer before crashing head-on into a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Lauren Marie Leblanc, 17, Anderson said.

Smith and Leblanc, both of DeQuincy, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash — just over five miles south of DeQuincy — by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office, Anderson said. Both were wearing seat belts.

Another vehicle was damaged by flying debris, Anderson said.

A witness told troopers Smith was speeding and driving aggressively prior to the fatal crash, Anderson said.

Anderson said the crash remains under investigation.
