The sister of two men killed by gunfire late Sunday in Opelousas told authorities that one brother killed himself after he accidentally shot and killed the other, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Joshua Miller, 27, of New Roads, picked up what he thought was an unloaded handgun and fatally shot his younger brother, 25-year-old Jeremiah Miller, of Ventress, in the chest, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. It happened about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Magnolia Street.

“After talking to the witness and from all indications, it doesn’t appear to have been an intentional act to kill his brother,” St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.

Their sister was witness to the shootings and reported it to police, St. Landry Parish Chief Deputy Hilman Papillion said. Both men were visiting the home, but Papillion on Monday could not confirm at whose home the shooting took place.

Deputies first responded to a report of a suicide at the Magnolia Street address, the Sheriff’s Office said. When they arrived at the home, they found two men with gunshot wounds in an outdoor kitchen area. Both men were pronounced dead on the scene.
