St. Martin Parish authorities are investigating the discovery of a body found early Tuesday in a vehicle after others in the car fled following a police pursuit, officials said.

St. Martin Parish sheriff’s deputies are investigating the body’s discovery, which was made by St. Martinville police officers who pursued a “suspicious car” after reports of gunshots fired within the city, St. Martin Sheriff’s Maj. Ginny Higgins said in a news release.

“After the vehicle came to an abrupt stop, two black males fled the vehicle on foot,” Higgins said.

City police had responded to shots fired on or near Governor Mouton Street at around 2:30 a.m., then followed the car onto Ledoux Street before the two men ran away, leaving the body of a male inside the car, Higgins said.

Higgins said police do not know the age or identity of the victim.

The males who fled the car have not been caught or identified, Higgins said.
