NEW IBERIA - Officials with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette New Iberia Research Center say they do not anticipate the need to evacuate primates housed outdoors at the facility, which is located near the chemical fire at Multi-Chem.

Louisiana State Police Haz-Mat personnel, firefighters and other emergency responders are at the scene, in the 3000 block of West Admiral Doyle Drive.

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Capt. Ryan Turner said evacuation orders have been issued for an area within 5 miles of the site and residents are advised to stay indoors until officials determine the types of chemicals involved in the incident, Turner said.

Turner said firefighters are working to control the blaze at the business, which is located on the old Navy base where several industries and an animal research center owned by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette also are housed.

Turner said officials are still assessing whether it would be necessary to evacuate the animal research center, which houses primates outdoors.
