Lafayette police responded to a car accident Saturday night that left a male bicyclist dead near Interstate 49.

The woman driving the vehicle told police she was traveling north on Northwest Frontage Road on I-49 when the bicyclist merged onto the road, police spokesman Cpl. Paul L. Mouton said in a news release. The accident occurred at the point where Northwest Frontage Road meets Butcher Switch, Mouton said. The bicyclist was transported to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced dead, Mouton said.

The driver did not suffer any injuries, Mouton said.

No other information about the driver of the bicyclist were immediately available.

Traffic investigators said the intersection is closed and motorists need to find an alternate route, Mouton said.
