A Charenton man who pleaded guilty to one count of assault of a Chitimacha Tribe member was sentenced Tuesday to one year in federal prison and a year of supervised release.

Dugan Joseph Burleigh, 34, who is not a member of the Native American tribe, was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge C. Michael Hill in the January attack. Burleigh admitted to hitting the woman from behind then continuing to hit her after she fell to the ground.

The victim suffered a broken nose, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley.

Congress has passed special laws governing crimes on American Indian lands, which the U.S. Justice Department prosecutes. The FBI and Chitimacha Tribal police investigated the case.
